No Frills Union Agreement

TORONTO, November 10, 2015 /CNW/ – Unifor members of Local 414 have voted to ratify a new collective agreement with No Frill grocery stores. The unit has 1,265 employees in 19 agencies across Ontario. Paul Abererty, the president`s executive assistant, was the union`s negotiator. “UFCW Canada Local 1006A is proud to be on the front lines of fairness for grocers in the workplace,” said Wayne Hanley, President of Local 1006A. “As a union for 10,700 workers in No Frills, Ontario, we are pleased to have secured a fair and equitable contract that promotes the rights and livelihoods of our members. No Frills employee is the second largest bargaining unit of the local union. Go to one of these stores, and you`ll find members who work in a variety of roles like employees, cashiers, pharmacy assistants, night crew and much more. The union also provided significant wage increases for full-time and part-time workers of 6 to 9% during the duration of the agreement. “Congratulations to Paul and the negotiating committee for a good job on behalf of our members,” said Executive Vice President Pearl Sawyer. “Our local union is proud to have negotiated a leading language that protects our members, who are subjected to domestic violence.” Unifor is one of Canada`s largest retail unions, with more than 20,000 members, active in supermarkets, pharmacies, appliance stores and other retail stores. The union, which represents 1,265 workers at No Frills branches across Ontario, voted to ratify a new collective agreement. “Members spoke loud and clear about what they wanted to see in the new treaty,” Abererty said. “You have sent us a warrant, and I am pleased to inform you that we have delivered for all members with strong support for profits.

Approximately 10,500 union members are employed at 148 No Frill sites in Ontario. Guildwood Valu-mart in Scarborough is also included in the No Frills collective agreement. Most No Frills stores are franchises and are part of Canada`s largest grocer, Loblaw Companies Ltd. Note: This article is a short story. “We negotiated prescription drug coverage for eligible part-time employees – a first for Unifor members at No Frills,” said Christine Connor, President of Unifor Local 414. “We also achieved significant wage increases of 6% to 9% for full-time and part-time workers during the duration of the agreement. Hundreds of workers earning the minimum wage will see their wages improve immediately. In July, Unifor 414 also agreed to prevent 4,000 employees from 28 subway agencies in the Toronto area from striking. “This is a good deal for me as a full-time worker because of salary increases and the language that protects members from customer abuse,” said Jeff Lebanon of a Toronto No Frills. “Retail is a very difficult sector,” said Jerry Dias, Unifor`s national president.
