Photography lessons in Schools

Next week I will be doing a couple of days teaching photography to secondary school children in Uxbridge, West London. I will be doing this with fellow photographer David Streeter and the job has been arranged by Explosive Events. I have done a number of photography classes with children over the years and love working with schools. The itinerary looks pretty action-packed with five classes each day and I am sure we will have a lot of fun.

For me, the aim of the classes is to get the children inspired and to get them to switch the camera off automatic and get them to start thinking about how to use a camera to best advantage using aperture and shutter priority modes and to give them a basic understanding that photography is all about time, light and composition. Once you understand the way the camera works you can take better photos. We are also going to be introducing basic photoshop skills so that they can enhance their photos and edit them with an end result in mind.

Photography is simple once you understand the basics. My own children have proved to me that if you understand how your camera works and have some rudimentary editing skills you can take some great photos…
