I will be exhibiting at the Stylish Events wedding fair in a few weeks at the Metropole in Brighton. I regularly do wedding fairs with Stylish Events and usually aim to do three or four fairs every year as they are a great way to meet couples face to face and usually result in a number of bookings.

The team at Stylish Events do a great job and select some of the best wedding professionals to exhibit at their fairs and they also ensure a healthy footfall by advertising their events really well. There is usually a fashion show to promote the latest trends in wedding fashion and a diverse range of exhibitors.

Shoreham Beach is particularly beautiful at low tide during a dramatic sunset. Last week the conditions were perfect with very low tides just as the sun was starting to set and I was fortunate enough to be out two days running, walking my dog with my son. The photos were taken with my old Canon G9, which is an excellent older compact digital camera, which still takes lovely photos in the right conditions.

At this time of year a lot of my time is dedicated to my wedding book service. I take a lot of book orders from couples in October and I then design and order the books in time for pre-Christmas delivery. Many couples order a large book for themselves and also order smaller books for relatives and friends.

This year has been particularly busy with lots of orders for the Graphistudio books. Graphistudio are the best wedding book makers in the business and have been doing my books for the last six years. The books come in a range of different sizes. The quality is luxurious with thick pages printed on photographic paper and a beautiful range of covers. If smaller books are ordered then I design a dust jacket for the books.

Back in July (it seems like such a long time ago now) we went to Camp Bestival again with some friends. Camp Bestival is a very family friendly festival set in the beautiful grounds of Lulworth Castle with live performances taking place on several stages and in large marquees and also a diverse range of activities for the kids to enjoy.

We managed to get a decent position close to the hub of it all, within easy walking distance of the main stages and had a fantastic five days away.

Highlights for me were seeing Little Roy, Jimmy Cliff, Prince Fatty Soundsystem, David Rodigan, Kool & The Gang and meeting up with my old mate and stand-up comedian Andre Vincent. Highlights for the kids were Rizzle Kicks, Stooshe and Dick & Dom.

Over the years I have worked with a number of charities. I am currently working with Age UK, the charity formed from Age Concern & Help the Aged, which offers information and advice on benefits, care, age discrimination and computer courses.

Last Thursday I was at the House Of Commons taking photos for Age UK and Age Action Alliance: a coalition of charities, businesses and other organisations which aim to take coordinated action to improve later life. The event was organised to promote the campaign “Spread the Warmth”.

Each year tens of thousands of older people become seriously ill or even die because of the cold. Age UK is campaigning for action to tackle this issue and as part of this we are highlighting the issue with MPs to encourage them to take action.

MPs were photographed with a message of support for the campaign and I was also available to photograph speeches from MP’s and campaigners. Security at the Houses Of Parliament is obviously very tight and the photos taken are not available for public view but will be used by Age UK and Age Action Alliance to promote various campaigns.

While I was at Westminster I did take some photos that I can share, including this night view from the Pavilion Terrace.

World Travel Market takes place in London every year and is the leading global event for the travel industry, offering a diverse range of destinations and industry sectors to UK and International travel professionals.

This year I did photography for KBC PR & Marketing who were representing a number of USA based tour and vacation operators:

KBC, an award winning travel and tourism PR, representation and marketing agency have had fifteen years’ experience working with some of the best clients in the world, from big international holiday destinations, to hotels, to tour operators and travel websites.  Specialisms are PR, marketing and destination representation in the UK, Ireland and Europe and they have a particular interest in sustainable tourism.

WTM took place at the Excel on American election day and the brief was to get some vibrant photos of the busy exhibition booths promoting tourism in the USA. The photos taken for KBC are private view only but many included travel professionals with the presidential candidates. Whilst at the Excel I had to select, edit and FTP the photos over to various clients and trade press including Travel Trade Gazette and Travel Weekly so that they could be used in the magazines immediately. Many thanks to the staff in the Press Office at the Excel who were on hand to provide Wifi and a space to work.

I do a lot of product photography from my small studio and have good studio lighting, backdrops and a light tent to ensure good even light and clean results. Over the last few months i have been doing shots for a sports clothing company MKK Sports who offer bespoke team-wear solutions:

It has been really good to have the time over the last week to catch up. After months of being flat-out there is a period of respite and it has given me a chance to catch up with the boring stuff, back up the recent shoots and keep the blog updated. I have also edited some new lifestyle photos taken over the summer. I usually have a camera on me as I don’t like taking photos with a phone. Some of these photos were taken with my old 1970’s film cameras, the Olympus Trip and the Canon A1, some were taken with my old G9 and there are also shots taken with my trusty 5D’s.

Natasja & Nikhil

Over the last few years I have photographed a number of Asian weddings. Indian, Pakistani, Hindu, Sikh, and Muslim weddings are beautiful to photograph and are fantastic celebrations that often have a number of separate ceremonies taking place over a few days. The wonderful traditions, vibrant colours and beautiful rituals are a joy to witness and are exciting to photograph.

A couple of years ago I was very nearly lucky enough to get flown out to New Delhi to photograph a traditional Hindu wedding, this was after photographing the civil ceremony in London. Unfortunately on this occasion it didn’t happen, but I am hoping that one day I will be lucky enough to experience the authenticity of an Indian wedding in India.

Asian wedding photographers are often required to have a backdrop and studio lights for some of the more formal family group photographs. At Muslim wedding I photographed recently I had to set up a studio set to take photos of the bride with friends and family.

Cycling on the Downs

Cycling is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK in spite of the Lance Armstrong controversy. It is constantly in the news and the recent successes at the Tour de France and Olympics have led to a massive surge in interest for the sport from mountain-biking and bmx to track and road racing. The British teams are now regularly winning the yellow & rainbow jerseys and gold medals and cycling clubs have noticed a massive surge in membership.

I have always been a keen cyclist and it is great to see the incredible rise in popularity over the last few years. I am very much an amateur but my wife and son are taking the sport very seriously and have entered races and we are out on the Downs regularly.

I recently took photos at the Stanmer Park “Stilettos On Wheels” mountain bike race for girls and have also done photography for Paralympics GB at the Manchester Velodrome Paralympics World Cup where I concentrated on the wheelchair basketball and cycling events.

In August Dil Davies of Porter & Davies asked me to take some product photos of the new Rack Mount BC2. I have been photographing Porter & Davies range of drum amplification products for a couple of years and have also photographed some of the world’s most respected drummers who endorse the products.

Last month I did a really interesting and enjoyable shoot for STS. STS (School Travel Service) is based in Brighton and organizes a wide range of cultural excursions for schools groups.

Previously I have shot hotels and resorts in the French and Italian Alps and this time I was taking photos of a school group from Cheam High School on a cultural trip to Catalonia with a focus on arts and language. We explored some of the stunning architecture in Barcelona including the Sagrada Familia Cathedral which is still under construction following the blueprints designed by Goudi, visited the historic city of Girona and also went to the amazing Dali Museum in Figueres.

The trip was a great success and I would like to thank staff from STS (in particular Thomas Morren) for giving me this opportunity, and staff and pupils from Cheam High School for being so easy to work with and for allowing me to take photos throughout their excursions.

I am always suspicious when I read on a blog or social/business networking site that the writer is really busy! If someone is that busy then how do they find the time to regularly update blogs and continually comment on their status! To be busy is to be successful and success is synonymous with having a quality product or service. I am being a bit cynical here I guess, especially as I am about to do the very thing I am indirectly criticizing…

My last post back in the summer, promised more regular updates to my blog, but in truth I haven’t been able to fulfill this promise as I have been literally rushed off my feet! Perhaps I just need to prioritize better as blogs are a fantastic way to keep people informed and only work effectively when regularly updated. Note to self: Keep your blog up to date!

Since my last post back in July it has been a roller-coaster ride for me with nine weddings (each of which represents a week’s work), a couple of sports clothing shoots for MKK, product photography for Porter & Davies  and Transformulas, a number of interiors photo-shoots for Russell Blake, corporate photography for the opening of new premises for Lighthouse in Brighton, World Travel Market photography for KBC PR & Marketing, a couple of private parties, corporate portraits for CAE, a four day trip to Barcelona for School Travel Service, shoots for the charity Age UK and various new lifestyle photography shoots. I have also attended a couple of wedding fairs and in the last couple of weeks have designed and ordered wedding books for a number of couples, plus there have been lots of enquiries for weddings next year and a couple of big corporate photography proposals to put together… I literally haven’t stopped.

F2 Freelance Photographer magazine have printed a seven page article about Demuth Photography in their business section this month. The Editor, David Land, came across my work when visiting the Grand Designs exhibition where my photography was featured at Russell Blake’s stand.

F2 Freelance Photographer – 64 pages, ten times annually, of practical inside information about the business side of being a freelance photographer! F2 Freelance Photographer is the, London based, magazine published ten times each year for the freelance professional, and semi-professional, photographer and everyone working towards a career as a self-employed photographer.

I must admit that I am not a regular buyer of magazines and I am also not a creature of habit. Over the course of a year I will probably buy a different magazine every month so I can get a broad range of opinions and narrative. However F2 Freelance photographer is a publication I frequently buy as I think that the magazine not only looks great but has diverse content and well written articles, it is also a useful reference point with interesting features for freelance photographers and has a great Business section. F2 Freelance magazine is available in print or on-line and if you are not familiar with the magazine take a look for yourself, it is definitely worth a read…

I received copies of the magazine at the end of last week and I am really pleased that I am featured so positively in the magazine. Many thanks to David Land for this wonderful opportunity.

Most of the orders I receive for Graphistudio bespoke wedding books are during the run up to Christmas however wedding books can be ordered at any time throughout the year and in the last month I have designed wedding books for Bauke & Suzanne who were married at Denbies Wine Estate in November 2010 and Dan & Lindsey who were also married at Denbies in October 2011.

As recommended photographer at Denbies Wine Estate I receive a lot of wedding bookings and the venue is a perfect year-round wedding venue with amazing scenery and fantastic facilities.

Graphistudio books are designed by me using the couple’s choice of photos and are a great way to remember your wedding. Books come in a range of sizes from 40x50cm to 10x13cm and are stunning!

Virginia Wine

This year I seem to be getting more corporate events bookings. I really enjoy this work and it is always good when companies come back and book you again. KBC PR & Marketing are one company who regularly use me for corporate shoots. KBC provide marketing and PR services for the travel industry and last month on the 15th and 16th June I took photos of the Governor and First Lady of Virginia during their stay in London.

The primary purpose of the visit was to promote Virginia Tourism whose motto is “Virginia is for Lovers”, Virginia Wine and the Richmond Ballet. However the Governor and his family were on a tour of Europe and his stay in London coincided with his birthday.

The assignment started on the Friday with photos at London’s Waldorf Hilton Hotel where the Governor, Bob McDonnell, and his family were guests of honour for a wine tasting session hosted by international wine expert and “Oz and James’s Big Wine Adventure” presenter Oz Clarke.

There was then a reception for the Richmond Ballet followed by the first performance by the Richmond Ballet at the Royal Opera House and an address to invited guests after the performance.

Saturday involved a visit to the old Barkers of Kensington building which now is home to Whole Foods Market and The Wine Hub for another wine tasting session for the general public hosted by Oz Clarke.

Thank you to everyone who helped to make this shoot such a smooth and pleasurable assignment. Special thanks go to: Eugene, Helena and Jo from KBC for organizing everything so meticulously; Bob McDonnell and his family and entourage for being so gracious throughout and for being such nice people to photograph; Oz Clarke for being such an all-round nice guy and for enriching the weekend with his wine knowledge and presentations; Royal Opera House for allowing me to take photos at the prestigious Opera House and for arranging a room and internet access so I could wire photos over to Viriginia; staff at the Waldorf Hilton for ensuring that the reception for the Governor ran smoothly; and finally I would also thank the black taxi driver for not telling me the score of the England v Sweden match (which had been going on during the evening) and which I enjoyed later…

Needless to say, there were plenty of photo opportunities over the two days. I really enjoyed the shoot and I am very pleased with the end results. On the 24th June I was asked to take photos of Anja’s Christening at Hurstpierpoint Church. I have photographed a number of weddings at Hurstpierpoint and in spite of the essential building works being undertaken the church still looked great on the day. Proud parents Philli and Pete asked me to take photos after photographing the christening of their son Hugo a couple of years ago and it was lovely to see so many familiar faces and get photos of the religious service and also the reception at the New Inn.

If you have a family celebration on the horizon then what better way to capture the memories than getting a photographer to cover the event. I would love to do more christenings as they are always such happy occasions and I love taking social photos. I am completely CRB checked (enhanced disclosure) and find that the best and most natural photos can be taken during social occasions where there are plenty of distractions and guests are often unaware that I am zooming in and capturing those magic moments.

Another month has gone by! I have the best intentions in the world to keep the blog up to date, but then you get busy and work seems to take over and next thing you know it’s been over a month since the last update! Apologies…

The last month has been genuinely hectic. Wedding season is well and truly here and that means busy weekends and lots of meetings with couples to finalize arrangements. Most wedding photographers have reported reduced bookings this year and while my bookings haven’t increased I am pleased that they are at about the same level as last year and so far they have been great weddings with lovely couples in fantastic venues. A wedding  is a week’s work if you do the job properly which is why it is often a false economy to go for the cheapest quote or even worse to get a friend to take the photos. A wedding is probably one of the few times in your life when you have all of your friends and family around you and if you want photos that capture the day artistically and flatteringly it is worth paying for someone to take the job seriously!

This last month has also seen a lot of corporate work with a two day shoot for KBC PR & Marketing at the Waldorf Hilton, the Royal Opera House and Whole Foods Market in Kensington and another shoot at Shoreham Academy. In addition to this there have been social shoots in the form of a christening in Hurstpierpoint and a joint 21st birthday party at the Valmont Club in Chelsea. I have also designed and processed a couple of wedding book orders and have also been featured in Freelance Photographer magazine… but more on these later.

The one final ingredient to complete the mayhem which has been the last month (aside from lots of work, the car dying, getting a newer car, my mum breaking her arm and needing an operation and normal hectic family life) concerns Lola, our lovely working cocker spaniel who has now turned one year old and has had her first season.

I won’t go into the gory details but lets just say it has been colourful and has been punctuated with lots of solo walks away from other dogs.

Shoreham Academy is a progressive new “Academy Status” school in Shoreham By Sea. Based on the site of the old Kings Manor School, the academy has built a new school that incorporates a new modern design with state of the art facilities.

I was commissioned last month by Be Creative to take photos for the new prospectus and website with an emphasis on lifestyle photos of the children and interior shots of the new build.

During the two day shoot I was very impressed with the school. Bright open spaces allow the light to flood in and the architectural design is quite breath-taking.

Staff and students at the school were very friendly and helpful. The shoot was a great success and special thanks are due to Anna at Shoreham Academy for arranging consent to photograph some of the children and to Gemma King at Be Creative for arranging the shoot and art-directing.

I will be going back to the school soon to get the remaining photos done and will also get some 360 degree photos of the site and new interiors. Photos taken of the children are private view only but these are some of the interior photos taken.

A couple of weeks ago I did some more product photography for Transformulas who make anti-ageing cosmetic products and whose motto is “Beauty Without Surgery”. These shots involved creating a layered document with the two photos (product and pack) being cut-out and then pasted onto a white background. Tansformulas design team will then add any drop shadows thy require, depending on how the photos are used.

A lot of photographers don’t like doing product shots but I enjoy the challenge of getting good clean photos in a studio environment. For this sort of photography, detail and light are everything and to diffuse the light from my Bowens strobes I use a large light tent.

I love portrait photography and do a lot of shoots in Sussex, Surrey and London, from corporate head-shots for large corporations to small family sessions. It is always lovely when you get a call to do some baby photos from a couple whose wedding you have photographed.

Ben & Jo were married last year at Dale Hill Hotel and it was a real pleasure to see Jo the other week with baby Jude. Jude was only a couple of weeks old when I took this shot and it was essential to use natural light to avoid startling him.

Throughout the summer I have a number of baby and family portrait sessions booked and love trying to capture the family relationships with particular emphasis on natural expressions.

The Burnham Beeches Hotel is a great venue for weddings with luxurious interiors, friendly staff and beautiful grounds. Claire and Neil were married there on the 5th May and the wedding was fantastic.

May was particularly busy with a couple of weddings, a wedding fair at the Grand Hotel, wedding book orders, corporate shoots for KBC PR and Saga, Transformulas and Russell Blake, Grand Designs Exhibition, a big school shoot for Shoreham Academy, lots of editing and a number of important meetings which will hopefully lead to more work.

The Grand Designs Live London Exhibition takes place at the Excel this weekend (5th-13th May 2012). I do a lot of interiors shoots for interior designers and furniture makers and although I will not be exhibiting this year as I have a couple of shoots next week, examples of my interior photography will be on display at Russell Blake’s stand.

Russell Blake makes amazing kitchens and bespoke hand-crafted furniture using responsibly sourced materials and his craftsmanship is second to none.
Visitors to his stand will also be able to see a slide-show of my photography and there will be postcards to go in the goody bags.

On the 31st March I photographed Carly & Steve’s wedding at St Mary’s church in Westham near Pevensey and the castle.

The reception was held at the English Wine Centre and Cuckmere Barns in Alfriston, a perfect location with excellent facilities.

I  went with fellow photographer Jim Young and my brief was primarily to get hotel and resort photos while Jim’s was to get photos of the children learning to ski. We had a really enjoyable and productive week covering 10 different resorts and 13 different hotels.

I have been done a number of shoots for various travel companies and interior designers. I really enjoy shooting interiors, there are so many things you have to get right (light, perspective, composition) and the shots usually require detailed editing but when it all comes together the results are very pleasing.

In addition to the interiors photography I did a number of 360 degree virtual tours of the main hotels for use on the STG websites and these will be available over the next couple of weeks. I was also taking photos of the various school groups in and around the hotels. I do a lot of schools shoots but for obvious privacy reasons won’t be posting photos of the children. I can however post this photo of one of the ski instructors at Montgenevre. The sun was intense on the slopes and ski goggle marks are a common sight with the instructors.

The real thrill of this shoot for me were the alpine landscapes. I love mountainous areas. I am a frequent visitor to the Lake District and have visited the Alps in the Summer. To see the mountains in the winter covered in snow was amazing. I was very envious of the skiers and snow-boarders and it is now a mission of mine to learn to ski or snowboard.

Possibly my favourite resort was Alpe D’Huez. We were there twice during the week and the ClubHotel Beau Soleil is a lovely hotel right on the piste with lovely facilities and amazing breath-taking views.

I was contacted last week by Rachel at Shikasuki seeking permission to use my catwalk photos taken at London Fashion Weekend. Rachel runs a very stylish shop in Primrose Hill, writes a very popular fashion blog “Shikasuki” and I am very happy that the photos are being used.

The organisers of London Fashion Weekend sometimes use items from my shop in their runway shows. I am happy to loan them for free, as the resulting photos are wonderful and obviously something I could never create myself. This year your photographs really jumped out to me as the best runway shots…they are fantastic!

Also featured on the Shikasuki blog are some fantastic backstage photos by Spencer Sunar. They really capture a mood and show the clothes off (especially Prim Rose) in a different light. I love this kind of photography and respect is definitely due to Spencer Sunar.

Rock and blues guitar superstar Joe Bonamassa is in town playing at the Brighton Centre tonight playing with his amazing band. Joe’s drummer Tal Bergman is widely regarded as one of the best in the business known for his sense of “groove” and he has been touring with Bonamassa’s band since 2011.

Tal Bergman has toured and recorded with some of the most exciting performers on the music scene, including Billy Idol, Joe Zawinul, Simple Minds, LL Cool J, Rod Stewart, Chaka Khan and Terrence Trent DArby. His musical versatility spans hard rock, funk, R&B and jazz. He is also the associate producer and drummer on the platinum and Grammy nominated album (7 million world wide) It Had To Be You…The Great American Songbook by Rod Stewart. As a drummer, Bergman has worked with Herb Alpert, Belinda Carlisle, Peter Certera, Phranc, and MC Solaar to name a few. His film credits as composer include “The Circle”(2005) Dancing at the Blue Blue Iguana (2000), Wedding Bell Blues (1996), Kill Me Later (2001) and the The Untold (2002).

Tal Bergman was very happy to endorse the BC2 drum amplification system by Porter & Davies and it was great to meet him and some of the band this afternoon. Tal was very generous with his time and was a really genuine and nice guy. Dil Davies, Jerome Marcus and I were made to feel very welcome and it is a real shame that I couldn’t take advantage of his very kind offer of a free ticket for tonight! Hopefully next time…

I was lucky enough to catch the sound check though, and was really impressed with Joe Bonamassa and the band. The rhythm section were amazing and Joe Bonamassa’s guitar playing was remarkable!

Since NAAM (the annual drum show/exhibition held in the USA every year) Porter & Davies have seen a massive surge in interest in their products. The BC2 and Gigster are both very much in demand and many notable and famous drummers have jumped on board and are singing the praises of this unique drum amplification system that generates physical sound through bone amplification. This weekend I am off to France for a week taking resort, hotel and ski photos for STS School Travel Service. I will be traveling out with fellow photographer James Young and will be taking photos of the resorts, hotels and schools groups learning to ski and enjoying the culture. We will be based in Serre Chevalier and visitng different resorts every day including: Risoul, Alpe D’Huez (where I did a shoot last year), Les Deux Alpes, Montgenevre, Corbier, Sansicario, Cesana and Bardonecchia. STS arrange school trips abroad and have a number of titles including: SkiPlan, Equity School Ski and RocketSki and we will be taking photos for use in these brochures and for general marketing.

The Mont Blanc Region

The French Alps are beautiful and I fell in love with the area last year when I did a Summer shoot for TUI. I am really looking forward to working with James Young who is an accomplished and excellent ski photographer and can’t wait to experience the Alps in winter. Fresh snow is forecast for the day before we arrive so hopefully we can expect excellent conditions with clean snow and blue skies.

I do a lot of schools photography and it is always great when you get to do shoots away from the classroom. Companies like STS create inspiring, learning opportunities for young people and organize fantastic trips all year round for schools. Lifestyle photography is photography that defines and reflects life, that creates a mood, is emotive and hopefully timeless. The images are often personal, narrative and evocative, moments of magic. Demuth Photography was born out of a love of this kind of photography.

I usually have a camera on me when I am out and about, whether it is an old-school film camera (such as the Canon A1) or an old compact digital camera (like my Canon G9). They may not be the fastest or the most up to date but are still capable of taking very good photos. Perhaps I should be taking out my pro bodies and L lenses more often but there is something nice about having a camera in your pocket, rather than a pack on your back.

Opportunities to get good photos are always at hand when out on the daily dog walks in and around Shoreham By Sea. I regularly take Lola out for walks along the river, by the sea or up to the Downs.

Lola now has now made a lot of friends, including Truffle who is another lovely working cocker spaniel and is owned by good friends of mine, Richard and Tegan.

Melanie C and the band at Concorde 2

Last Wednesday I was at Concorde 2 in Brighton, taking photos of Melanie C in concert. Concorde 2 is one of my favourite music venues, with an intimate atmosphere, a great sound-system and an eclectic line up of bands. Melanie C has released five solo albums since her “Sporty Spice” days and is widely respected. A great song-writer and energetic performer, Melanie’s current tour promotes her new album “The Sea”.

Since the start of her music career in 1996, Melanie C has enjoyed enormous world-wide success with Spice Girls, as well as a succesful solo career with the release of her five solo albums, not to mention a hugely successful journey in the musical theatre.

Melanie C’s fifth album titled ‘The Sea’ – made under her own independent record label Red Girl Records – has been released four years after her last output. The new material is more adventurous than her other work, making it evident that her musical confidence is growing, so you can expect a great atmosphere, captivating performance and incredible live vocals at Concorde2.

Mel’s drummer Vinnie Lammi is a good friend of mine and he made it possible for me to get a photographer’s pass at The Concorde. As is so often the case at concerts, photographers are only allowed to take photos during the first three songs and are not allowed to use flash.

It would have been great to have longer than the 15 minutes, the energy was there from the very beginning, but there were lots of fantastic shot opportunities throughout the rest of the set. Concorde 2 was pretty rammed and I couldn’t get right at the front without seriously annoying Mel C devotees (long lenses and big cameras can kind of get in the way) so I got as close as I could and shot away. Unfortunately the lighting at the gig meant that it was virtually impossible to get decent photos of my friend Vinnie playing (Sorry Vinnie!). Lighting was great for Mel and the front line of the band but the fantastic drummer was largely left in the dark.

I am really pleased with the results and they have been sent to Melanie and the band. The gallery is private view only for the time being but as soon as I get the ok from Melanie C I will make the gallery live so the photos can be seen.

I have been doing product photography and pack shots for a while now and work frequently with beauty companies.

These high-key photos have been taken in my studio using a “Walimex Pro” light tent and Bowens studio strobes to maximize the impact of the chrome and glass.

When shooting high key white products in a light tent you have to be very careful to ensure that the product’s highlights are distinct from the white back ground so exposure and light source are the key to successful photos. The designers using the photos can then easily create the cut-outs to be used in advertisements or for websites.

It is also important that you minimize the reflections in the chrome and any reflective surfaces so I shot through an aperture in the front of the light tent to avoid getting reflections of me and the camera. To add impact I also added black strips of cardboard to get the high contrast shadow look on the chrome.

On my way home from London Fashion Weekend I noticed the reflections of the South Bank from the Embankment, and stopped to take a couple of photos. Last Friday I was at Somerset House at London Fashion Weekend. It was a great opportunity for me and I was taking photos of the catwalk show from the Press Pit. Previous fashion related assignments have been more about lifestyle photography so this was a rare chance to experience the challenges that the catwalk presents.

Somerset House was awash with designers and fashion devotees keen to see the new ranges.

The impressive and beautifully lit catwalk show was presented by Zoe Hardman and featured designs from Holly Fulton, Prim Rose, Antipodium, Game On and Jasper Conran.

I quickly learned that the secret of catwalk photography is getting the prime spot. You can get interesting variations by moving around and catching the models from different angles but at the end of the day the photos that work best will inevitably have engagement which invariably means “eye-contact”. For the last of the catwalk shows I was able to get a decent position and finally got the shots I was hoping for.

I use Fixation regularly for camera maintenance and repairs, they also sell photographic equipment and I have bought new and second-hand photography kit from them.

I nearly always use Canon cameras now, probably because the Canon A1 was my first proper SLR and as you accumulate and upgrade your kit, making the switch to Nikon or another brand becomes increasingly expensive. Canon cameras now feel like an extension of my arm and the build quality and amazing optics from their pro range have never let me down.

This Sunday I will be exhibiting at the Hilton Brighton Metropole Hotel. The wedding fair has been organized by Stylish Events and should be very popular with couples getting married in Brighton. The Fair will feature catwalk shows and every visitor will receive a goody bag. The last Stylish Events wedding fair I attended has already resulted in a couple of bookings so I am looking forward to taking part in this one.

I have done a couple of weddings at the Metropole and have also photographed the very popular Burlesque Ball here. The hotel has fantastic facilities and is situated on Brighton Seafront.

The wedding books are designed by me to feature your favourite photos and are printed on thick photographic paper. They come in a range of sizes and I also offer smaller parent and guest books.

The wedding books are always very popular with couples at wedding fairs and as I keep my prices within the realms of respectability are often a major contributing factor for couples choosing their wedding photographer.

When possible I also get a book done for the venue, especially if they already recommend me. Since the wedding venue is usually the first thing a couple arranges it makes sense to provide a book. Dale Hill will be getting a copy of Jo and Ben’s book. They already recommend me and are using one of my photos on a banner outside the hotel.

Tomorrow I will be at London Fashion Weekend taking catwalk photos from the Press Pit. The event is one of the highlights of London Fashion Week and takes place at Somerset House in central London. I am really looking forward to seeing some great designs and taking catwalk photos. I am not a fashion photographer, the beauty and fashion assignments I have worked on so far have all had more of a lifestyle feel, so this is an opportunity I am relishing.

Last Sunday 19th February I was exhibiting at the Fontwell Park Wedding Fair near Chichester. This is a busy time of year for wedding photographers with lots of enquiries for the year ahead so wedding fairs are a great way to reach wedding couples. At my stand visitors could meet me and see my work. The Graphistudio wedding books I design proved to be very popular with couples. My portfolio which includes a range of work (not just wedding photography) was on show along with framed prints.

The great Billy Cobham is currently playing at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in Frith Street this week. Billy Cobham uses Porter & Davies BC2 which generates physical sound through bone amplification. As Porter & Davies photographer I went up to Ronnie’s with Dil Davies and Jerome Marcus to get some photos of Mr Cobham with the BC2.

This was a real trip down memory lane for me. For years I was a member of Ronnie Scott’s and used to be a regular when I lived in London. Ronnie’s is the place to be if you love decent jazz music and over the years I have been lucky enough to catch some of jazz’s greatest musicians in action, up close, at this intimate and very fashionable jazz club. Yesterday was no exception, I was in the company of great musician and a lovely man. Billy Cobham is roundly recognized as one of the greatest jazz drummers who has entertained generations with numerous albums and many exciting collaborations. I was lucky enough to be added to Mr Cobham’s guest list last night and it was a pleasure to see the great man in action. His style is amazing and laced with subtlety. Beautiful compositions intertwine with the sublime tonal qualities of his drumming and ambidextrous rolls that take the breath away. I have been listening to his music for years and this was the first time I have seen Mr Cobham live. The tour is called the Palindrome Tour and Billy Cobham is appearing at Ronnie Scott’s until Saturday night.

Porter & Davies are very excited to have their products endorsed by Billy Cobham. Often the perception of their products is that they are designed with rock drummers playing live stadiums in mind, but the BC2 and Gigster are not just for making the drums louder for the drummer, they also enable the drummer to feel the differences in tone, pressure and nuance. Enabling the slightest differences in pressure to be physically experienced through bone amplification. The BC2 is a combination of seat and amp which give the drummer total control, enabling drummers to not just hear themselves properly during live gigs but also feel the subtle complexities of their playing.

Whilst at Ronnie Scott’s I also met David Sinclair who has been taking photos at Ronnie Scott’s for years and is an amazing photographer. Both inside and out, the Barn provides a setting to match the splendour of the occasion. Set among the ruins of Bexhill’s historic Manor House and overlooking the glorious rose garden and lily pond, the magnificent timbered and oak-panelled hall is capable of accommodating up to 120 guests, both for a marriage ceremony and a buffet reception. For sit-down meals the maximum number is 100. Outside, the preserved ruins of the Manor House and the exquisite Manor Gardens provide a perfect backdrop for wedding photographs.

Last week I did three shoots for Russell Blake who designs and builds the most beautiful kitchens and furniture. Based in London, Russell Blake Furniture uses wood from sustainable sources and his design and craftsmanship is second to none. Photos taken include a beautiful kitchen in Crystal Palace, designer wardrobes (with door to en-suite) & a kitchen in Blackheath and an amazing shelving unit in Greenwich. I have been Russell’s interior photographer of choice for the last five years and look forward to working with him more in the future.

Big thanks to Paul & Karen Nother who organize the PMN Wedding Fairs. Sunday’s fair at Goodwood Hotel was a great success with over 420 visitors and over 200 brides. The Demuth Photography stand was busy all day and by the end of the day I was actually losing my voice. PMN “hand pick” their exhibitors to ensure that the best wedding suppliers are on show, they also advertise the events well with radio and press ads. There was a great collection of exhibitors covering everything you could possibly need for a perfect wedding. The PMN staff present were friendly and helpful and kept me topped up with tea and coffee.

As a regular exhibitor with PMN I also get the opportunity to submit a banner ad for their website. I have designed the banner ad and should see it up on their site very soon. I will be exhibiting at the PMN Wedding Fair at The Grand Hotel Brighton on the 20th May 2012 which should be a fantastic event at a great venue who currently recommend me.

This week I have been working for Pure Creatives, the Hove design company, taking photos at Deepdene School in Hove doing some more “Day in the Life of a School” photos that Deepdene can use for prospectus, website and general marketing use. In spite of the dark gloomy weather the shoot was a great success with lots of staff and pupil interaction photos and lots of happy smiling children. The school is fantastic with small class sizes, excellent engaging staff and a lovely atmosphere. Thanks to Rob Bickell who organized the shoot and has used me for lots of schools photography assignments over the years. Thanks also to staff and pupils at the school who made me very welcome whilst I was taking photos. My schools photography is not the usual class portraits. I take photos in schools that show “a day in the life of a school” and these photos can then be used for marketing by the school. I am one of Dale Hill’s recommended suppliers and although I am unable to attend the fair my work will be available to see at the Dale Hill Hotel wedding stand. I will be providing a framed poster for the wedding fair, will have wedding books available for couples to see and will also be providing some postcards for the goodie bags, which are given to visitors to the fair.

All Demuth Photography wedding packages include: digital and film wedding photography, meeting at the venues before your wedding to discuss best locations and itinerary, professional retouching of all photos, a complete set of professional prints, a high resolution disc of images, website gallery of your wedding photos for friends and family to order from and delivery of prints and wedding books.

A wedding is a full week’s work if you do the job properly; one day taking photos, about three or four days selecting and editing the shots and then another day doing various things like meeting the couple, doing a recce of the locations, uploading photos to the website and journeys to and from the lab. Design for a wedding book usually takes an additional couple of days.
